Verse: "now the overseer (leader) must be
above reproach"
Observations: What comes to mind immediately as I
reflect on this verse is that a leader is a person who is character
conscious and self correcting. A leader does not require oversight
from others, but will require accountability. Further reflection
brings me to consider that a leader must have a good reputation
within the church and community. The idea of being above reproach is
'unimpeachable'. There is no substance to rumors, gossip, or
accusation against a leader. Pushing this further, I observe that
there is nothing in the character/reputation of a church leader that
would allow someone who is opposed or indifferent to the gospel to
deflect its message. The gospel deserves a hearing because of the
transformation in leader's lives. I must be a clean vessel for
effective gospel transmission.
Application: I realized that lasers must be
impeccably clean, or they will fail. The advance of the gospel is
dependent on the character and subsequent reputation of Christian
leaders. It follows then that leaders will be the focus of attack
from Satanic forces. This speaks powerfully to me about the
necessity of character and good reputation in my own life and that
of other leaders at Central. It is essential that leaders have
accountability in their lives. We must find mentors and peers who
will ask us the hard questions so that we are constantly guarding
ourselves and maintaining excellence in character and behavior. The
gospel is the means of godly leadership and godly leadership is a
requirement for its advancement.
Prayer: Father, help me to nourish my own
soul before you in your word so that my life is honest and
honorable. Thank you for the many godly and gifted leaders at
Central. We know that we were not born this way, but your grace has
won our hearts and changed our lives. You are tranforming us. Thank
you that there is power in the gospel for us to change and that
there is joy in becoming like your Son. Father, I know that I cannot
maintain my reputation by my own strength. Point out my weakness,
test me and purify me for your glory and the progress of the gospel
in our city.
