How to use the Deeper Journal
Reading, learning, and applying the Bible forms and renews our minds
(see Romans 12:2). We learn to live as God’s followers.
Reading the Bible develops our world view. We see God working,
responding, and interacting, and it changes us.
Journaling
is an excellent way to record and reflect on what God is teaching
you. When you write things down, you can review some of the ‘gems’
you have discovered. It is easy to forget these important lessons
when life overtakes you. A journal is a very personal and,
therefore, private exercise, but it can also provide some great
insights for you to share or for further questions you can ask your
small group or mentor. Discussion with others can take you even
deeper.
I have found the following outline to be
beneficial so it is easy to
recommend as a practice. SOAP
stands for 4 basic components:
Scripture,
Observation,
Application, and
Prayer.
S is
for Scripture. It might be a phrase or a few sentences that stand
out to you. Write it out. This will help you recall it during your
day.
Read consciously in God’s presence. (Invite Him by prayer.) Ask
Christ’s spirit to speak to you and to open your mind. When you are
done reading, think about the key idea.
O is
for Observation. What do you think God is saying? Ask the Holy
Spirit to reveal His truth to you (John 16:13). Paraphrase the
scripture in your own words.
A is
for Application. Personalize what you have read by considering how
it applies to your life right now. It may be encouragement,
correction, wisdom, a promise, or fresh insight. Write out how this
scripture applies to you today.
P is
for Prayer. Turn what you have observed and applied into a
personal prayer to you Heavenly Father. Do remember that
prayer is a two way conversation so listen to what God is saying to
you. (Be quick to listen and slow to speak.) Briefly record this
prayer time.
